An inspiring home from home where you can recharge your batteries in time for your next burst of activity. That’s the design hotel room that every (business) traveller dreams of. The same is true of hotel operators, who like nothing more than glowing reviews and guests who keep coming back.  

A hotel room is a miniature home when you’re on the road, and should not disappoint. A designer with so much experience of homes always keeps them in mind when working on a hotel design. A traveller should feel: ‘This is the place I want to be now, even though I’m just passing through.’ A hotel room design should fit like a bespoke suit. Many items are custom made to fit in perfectly with the hotel’s target guests and its proposition within the hotel market. These range from the controls beside the bed and the art on the wall, to the furniture and bath or shower controls.

Tasteful yet resilient

‘Hotel rooms should be designed for immediate use without difficulties, and the materials should be resistant to wear and tear. Rooms should be simple to enter and the luggage space should be inviting’, interior designer Robert Kolenik explains. There must be enough space in the bathroom to store personal toiletries and the lighting should be properly thought through. A guest must also be able to find his way around an unfamiliar room. All good designers take account of these technical and functional elements of hotel interior design. Kolenik also values details that act as eye-catchers or tell a story that will stay with guests. Items like a design coat hook, a handy moveable desk or an unusual collection. The interior should even go so far as to provide inspiration for guests’ home interiors. In this sense, hotels now play an exemplary role. For both hotel design and home design, Kolenik believes in always creating a warm welcome, wherever you are.
