Designed as a counterpart to the owners’ country residence, this Amsterdam pied-à-terre embraces a distinctly urban character while retaining the warmth and comfort of a true family home. Located near the Rijksmuseum, the apartment occupies a contemporary building whose sculptural curves became the starting point for the interior. Rather than introducing a contrasting design language, the architecture is echoed through rounded forms, mirrored surfaces and carefully composed detailing, allowing the interior to feel inseparable from the building itself.

The project’s defining challenge was an unusual ten-metre-wide horizontal recess in the living room wall, created by the neighbouring roofline. Too low for conventional use yet fully part of the floor area, it was transformed into one of the apartment’s strongest architectural features. Behind the seating area, the recess became an organically shaped niche with integrated lighting and planting, introducing a quiet indoor landscape that softens the transition between architecture and interior.

The same design approach continues throughout the apartment. Low cabinetry and a bespoke wine cabinet are carefully integrated beneath the restricted ceiling height, while travertine fronts visually extend towards the ceiling, concealing the unusable upper sections. During the design process, the owners discovered an appreciation for natural stone, recognising its ability to bring depth, warmth and permanence rather than mere decoration.

Comfort is equally defined by what remains unseen. Carefully considered acoustic treatments create a remarkably calm atmosphere, while bespoke wall textiles, bronze-tinted mirrored doors, Salvatori marble and Viabizzuno lighting contribute subtle layers of texture and refinement.

Rather than celebrating the energy of city living, the apartment offers a quiet retreat above it—an interior where architecture, craftsmanship and carefully balanced materials transform an unconventional urban space into a timeless home.
